Facebook Launches Its Own Search Engine: Graph Search
The new engine, dubbed Graph Search, was announced at a media event at Facebook's headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif., Tuesday, ending weeks of speculation that the social networking giant may be prepping its own branded smartphone or a new mobile app.
*****The Graph Search tool was touted by Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg as being an intuitive search engine that lets users perform searches with "natural" language rather than keywords. Unlike most search engines, Graph Search was built to respond to longer queries like "People who like tennis and live nearby" or "Sushi restaurants in Palo Alto my friends have liked" rather than the shorter keyword searches performed by sites like Google
Graph Search can also handle queries related to photos, allowing users to search for "Photos of my family" or "Photos of my friends taken in Italy," for example.
Facebook further distinguished Graph Search from generic Web search engines by explaining that every piece of content retrieved has "its own audience" and can't necessarily be seen by everybody on the site. Graph Search will only display content to users who would have been able to see it anyway, per their pre-existing privacy controls.
"We've built Graph Search from the start with privacy in mind, and it respects the privacy and audience of each piece of content on Facebook," wrote Tom Stocky, director of product management at Facebook, and Lars Rasmussen, director of engineering at Facebook, in the company blog Tuesday. "It makes finding new things much easier, but you can only see what you could already view elsewhere on Facebook."
Privacy concerns among Facebook users escalated last year, when the networking site killed off a feature allowing users to vote to change certain governance or privacy settings.
According to Eden Zoller, principal analyst at Ovum, Graph Search will significantly improve Facebook's search function, but it could also thrust the company's "mixed track record" with privacy back into the spotlight.
"Before the arrival of Facebook's Graph Search, the search function on Facebook was basic and as such, a wasted opportunity given Facebook's imperative to strengthen advertising revenues. Facebook Graph Search will no doubt leverage member data to provide advertisers with more targeted, personalized advertising opportunities going forward," Zoller said in a statement Tuesday. "But Facebook needs tread very carefully here and be mindful of user privacy. It claims to have built Graph Search with privacy in mind, but Facebook has a mixed track record on this front and is in the habit of pushing privacy to the limits of what is acceptable."
Investors also appeared unsure about the new Graph Search tool, with Facebook shares dropping 2.6 percent Tuesday afternoon.
Facebook said Graph Search is still in the "very early" stages of development. The tool is available in beta today, with the final version being built over the coming months. Once completed, Graph Search will likely be embraced by companies advertising on Facebook, as it will help them send customized ads to users based on their gender, age or location.
When Graph Search officially goes live, Zuckerberg said it will join the Timeline and Newsfeed features as the "third pillar" of Facebook.

Tax evasion: 5m Lagos residents to face prosecution
LAGOS State Government yesterday said it would commence the prosecution of tax defaulters in the state.
Disclosing this at a joint briefing by the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Mr. Ade Ipeye, Special Adviser to the Governor on Taxation, Mr. Abimbola Shodipo and the state Executive Chairman Inland Revenue service, Mr. Tunde Fowler said that of the estimated eight million residents in Lagos, statistics shows that only three million pay their taxes. He said that about five million residents do not pay thus leaving the tax burden on the three million who pay.
According to the state Commissioner for Justice, machinery has been put in motion to ensure criminal prosecution of these tax defaulters in the state.
He said that some 300, 000 were found in the last three years through the traffic offenders’ demand for tax clearance not to have paid any tax.
He said that some of these tax evaders are being investigated and that criminal charges will soon be instituted against them. Some, he said, have been invited to answer for discussion on their outstanding tax liability.
He said that most of the defaulters are professionals who have the means to pay their taxes but failed to do so because they feel they have no need of government.
Officials of the state government said that a formal notice have been served on residents with tax liability with a caution for them to pay up what they are owing.
They said that the state was not enacting any new law but was going to enforce a federal law which empowers each arm of government in the country to collect stipulated taxes.
According to the state government, in 1999 only 252,000 Lagos residents were paying tax, but this figure of taxpaying residents rose to 728,000 in 2005.
From a figure of 728, 000 in 2005, the number of taxpaying residents grew to 2, 700,000 in 2010 and increased by 300, 000 in 2011.
They said that as at 2012 the figure of taxpaying residents stood at three million.
Officials of the state government said that as at 2010 about 254 companies were owing the state a tax liability of about five billion naira.

World Bank: Nigeria’s Poverty Level Falls By 2%
The World Bank has praised economic policies of the present administration declaring that it has led to slight reduction in the country’s poverty index from 48 to 46%.
Speaking when he visited President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday, World Bank’s vice president for Africa, Mr Makhtar Diop said Nigeria’s economic indicators remained positive even times of recession.
He said, “At the time when the economy is going down, we have seen that Nigeria has been keeping a growth rate which is rather significant. So, I was here to hear from the President’s priority and discuss other issues such as how poverty has been evolving in the country and what we can do to accelerate the reduction of poverty.
“Our work recently has shown that there is slight reduction in the level of poverty in Nigeria moving from 48 to 46 percent. The trend is good. It needs to be accelerated obviously. What we discussed are the policies that we can put in place to accelerate the pace of poverty reduction in Nigeria.”
Diop said the World Bank has decided to intervene in Nigeria’s energy crisis saying, “We decided at the World Bank to put up a task force which will include private sector branch to support the reform. It is good that the reform is really making progress. I was with the main players of the power sector today, and they were all happy with the reform process so far.”
On his part, Jonathan said though some of the reforms were not easy to push through, his administration would continue to do its best towards ensuring sustainable growth in the country.
“We will continue to do our best. We would have had more robust growth by now but for the global economic recession. With your continued support, we will certainly achieve more,” the president said.
Jonathan added that with the continued support of the World Bank, other international institutions and investors the Federal Government will achieve an even higher growth rate for the national economy.

Why I relocated to Calabar – Shan George
Nollywood actress, Shan George, has relocated to her state, Cross River. But contrary to reports, she says she has not gone in search of greener or saner pastures.
According to the news making the rounds online, Shan George is said to have relocated because Calabar is more peaceful than Lagos. She was quoted as saying, “Calabar is heaven on earth. My hilltop Calabar home is as peaceful as a baby’s sigh.”
However, in a telephone exchange – spiced with hiccups due to erratic network – between the actress and our correspondent, Shan George says she is in a remote part of Cross River to nurse her mother who is bedridden.
Although Shan George did not disclose the nature of the illness, she says, “My beloved aged mother has been sick since March 2012. She’s been bedridden with a terminal illness. As an only child, it falls on me to stay with her till the end, so to make it less burdensome; I had to relocate to Calabar to take care of her. So for now, I just want to be with my mum and look after her. Whatever happens after that is in God’s hands.”
Shan George adds that she does not know how long or short her stay in Calabar would last, but that she is channelling all her strength towards her mother’s care while everything other thing would be on hold, “for God to handle”.
When the news of Shan George’s temporary exit from Lagos broke online, there were several comments. Some of these include insinuations that she may be warming up to take a political appointment like some popular artistes, including Richard Mofe-Damijo, who is currently the commissioner for Culture and Tourism in Delta State.
Shan George only laughed at the insinuations of a political appointment. She says politics is not one of her aspirations.
“I won’t make a good politician, I’m too brutally honest,” Shan George adds.
Sanusi Bombshell! Calls for Ban of CAN, ACF, JNI and Afenifere
The controversial governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has turned his attention to ethno-religious groups in the country. He has urged the Federal Government to ban them as a way of curbing insecurity in the country.
“I almost didn’t want to attend this occasion because I am opposed to regional, ethnic and religious groupings in this country. In fact, I would like the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Jamatul Nasril Islam (JNI) , Afenifere and all such other groups to be banned.”
Sanusi gave the suggestion at an inter-faith dinner organized by the Northern Reawakening Forum (NRF) in Abuja, on Tuesday.
He also asserted that all ethnic and religious groups in the country were actually political associations donning false cloak.
Elite fan embers of insecurity with religion
Sanusi, who attributed the state of insecurity in the country to a fall-out of the exclusiveness and marginalization which many Nigerians belonging to the younger generation had been subjected to, traced the current insecurity in northern parts of the country to power struggle among the elite who use religion to pursue their goals.
He lamented that despite the fact that the Northern region’s land mass constitutes about 60 per cent of the Nigerian landmass and agriculture contributes 42 per cent to the Nigerian economy, the region remained impoverished.
He blamed the northern insurgency on the selfishness of the nation’s elite which had failed to see the future.
But his suggestion elicited immediate condemnation from leaders of the affected groups, who described Sanusi’s comments as irresponsible.
CAN says Sanusi’s comments capable of breaching security
In its reaction, CAN, which said it could not be banned, said Sanusi’s barrage of controversial comments portended more danger to security than any non-religious group in the country.
Secretary-General of CAN, Rev Musa Asake, said:
“CAN is not the cause of trouble or insecurity in this country. CAN was formed to protect the interests of Christians, especially in fighting persecution. CAN is not a government institution like NEMA, which any person can wake up and disband. The 1999 Constitution guarantees freedom of association and Sanusi cannot just wake up and call on anybody to proscribe it.
Sanusi has been making several controversial statements and as a CBN governor, he should not make controversial pronouncements like this one. It is this type of statement that causes problems, not CAN as an institution. It is unfortunate that at a time like this, when Christians are being killed and churches burnt he is making this type of insensitive comment. CAN and JNI have come to stay. We have no quarrels and nobody can curtail CAN’s freedom of association as guaranteed by the constitution.”

After regaining her composure, Erelu Obada came back to lay a wreath at the Remembrance Arcade, though her hands can still be seen shaking.
